Hyper and Hypo Thyroidism are two types of the same disease that affect the thyroid of the Endocrine body system. Causes of hyper/hypo thyroidism
- secretion of the thyroid hormone from the thyroid is either dramatically overactive or underactive.
- sometimes caused if there is another small problem in the thyroid previous to the disease.
- sometimes caused by a disorder in the pituitary gland.
Symptoms
- Feeling chronically tired, being overly sensitive to cold, headache, muscle and joint aches, weight gain or loss, constipation, dry skin.
- Later on- Impaired mental activity (concentration and memory), depression, muscle weakness, pain, cramps, numbness in fingers, hearing loss, husky voice, sleepy appearance, obesity, plus skin and hair changes (hair loss and or dry flaky skin)
Treatment
- If thyroid is underactive, synthetic or animal based thyroid hormones to be taken for the rest of lifetime.
- For overactive thyroid the drug lithium can be taken.
- Powdered, dried thyroid hormones that have been extracted from animals can be taken.
